چکیده

To my mother, who has always been by side, during all the ups and downs in my life. iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS First, I would like to thank my adviser Prof. Raghupathy Sivakumar for his unwavering guidance and motivation. His high standards in clear thinking and effective communication are inspiring and will always help me stand in good stead. The GNAN research group gave me the opportunity to work with a group of talented and hard-working students. I would like to acknowledge Ram, and Sriram for the valuable discussions which helped in every aspect of this work. I would also like to thank Yeonsik, and Yujie for their assistance and help. Last but not the least, I would like to thank my mother and my brother. I owe all my success to their love, support, sacrifice and encouragement. I can never thank them enough. SUMMARY In this work, we consider the channel assignment problem in single radio multi-channel mobile ad-hoc networks. Specifically, we investigate the granularity of channel assignment decisions that gives the best trade-off in terms of performance and complexity. We present a new granularity for channel assignment that we refer to as component level channel assignment. The strategy is relatively simple, and is characterized by several impressive practical advantages. We also show that the theoretical performance of the component based channel assignment strategy does not lag significantly behind the optimal possible performance, and perhaps more importantly we show that when coupled with its several practical advantages, it significantly outperforms other strategies under most network conditions.

Channel Hopping Multiple Access with Packet Trains for Ad Hoc Networks

We present a new medium-access control protocol for ad hoc networks that does not require carrier sensing or the preassignment of unique codes to nodes to ensure that intended receivers receive unicast, or multicast, or broadcast data packets without interference from hidden sources. We call this new protocol channel hopping access with trains (CHAT). CHAT combines the notion of packet trains w...

An Energy Efficient Multichannel MAC Protocol for Cognitive Radio Ad Hoc Networks

This paper presents a TDMA based energy efficient cognitive radio multichannel medium access control (MAC) protocol called ECR-MAC for wireless Ad Hoc Networks. ECRMAC requires only a single half-duplex radio transceiver on each node that integrates the spectrum sensing at physical (PHY) layer and the packet scheduling at MAC layer. In addition to explicit frequency negotiation which is adopted...

A Receiver-Initiated Collision-Avoidance Protocol for Multi-Channel Networks

The medium-access control (MAC) protocols for wireless networks proposed or implemented to date based on collision-avoidance handshakes between sender and receiver either require carrier sensing or the assignment of unique codes to nodes to ensure that intended receivers hear data packets without interference from hidden sources. We present and analyze a new collision-avoidance MAC protocol tha...

Broadcast Routing in Wireless Ad-Hoc Networks: A Particle Swarm optimization Approach

While routing in multi-hop packet radio networks (static Ad-hoc wireless networks), it is crucial to minimize power consumption since nodes are powered by batteries of limited capacity and it is expensive to recharge the device. This paper studies the problem of broadcast routing in radio networks. Given a network with an identified source node, any broadcast routing is considered as a directed...
